Hi All, So i saw this news article on Yahoo today about Aussies conceding it's only a matter of time before same-sex marriage is legalised. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/9602817/many-believe-gay-marriage-will-happen-poll/ So if you could, would you like to marry?

i never believed in marriage as an institution, just that we should have the same rights as everyone else

Well, for me personally, I really want to get married one day and not because I need a piece of paper to tell me I am committed to another person but more as a celebration of our love and a legal declaration and that way it is recognised by the government. In America, life partners are being left with nothing when the other partner dies because they are refused recognition as being married therefore they have no rights. I think it is more about the rights than anything and I also believe that it is up to the individual. I know heaps of straight and gay couples that have chosen not to get married and have been living happily in committed relationships for years but maybe I'm just old fashioned and a hopeless romantic cos I still believe marriage is special.

Regardless of whether we want to get married or not, i definitely believe we should have the choice. I think every single person in the world should have the same rights - no more, no less - regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, social/financial status whatever! Unfortunately i don't think we will see this happen. I just think myself lucky for the wonderfully liberated life i have been allowed to live thus far, compared to those who have lived before me...and i hope it continues to get better for those who live after i leave.

i would absolutely loveee to get married one day, to the woman of my dreams. Its not about the paper but the basic human right which should be allowed for all no matter what your orientation. Just the thort of having that one special day reserved for the both of you and eachothers families to celebrate the emense love we share, its all a dream now but one day, maybe one day ill get to be the princess walking down that isle holding the hand of MY princess only a few steps away from being bonded together for lifes exciting journey.

totally. marriage is special and sacred, although you don't really need a piece of paper to prove your love to each other, somehow, to me, it just solidifies a bond that much stronger. I love my girlfriend and one day, when we are ready, I'd definitely want to be her wife, and her mine. Legally.

I suspect my straight female friends may only be in favor of gay marriage so that, when I can get married, they will have an excuse to dress in a suit and flaunt the title of 'best man'.

totally agree with liz :-) Though I don't find anything special about marriage and rather am quite opposed to it personally, that is beside the point, and what liz said sums up my beliefs on equal rights quite nicely :-)
